If you’re like me, your day begins with great intentions and the hope that it will be one filled with meaning and purpose.  However, the busyness of life quickly gets in the way, leading to challenges and distractions that can knock you right off course.  Before you know it, evening has arrived along with the realization that while you might have been extremely busy throughout the day,  you can’t remember accomplishing anything worthwhile.  And somewhere amidst all your efforts to figure out how to manage your life, you discover you are missing out on truly living it.

One way to keep from becoming too overwhelmed by all the things you cannot accomplish during the course of the day is to commit to doing one small thing each day that can make a big difference.  Something that takes a minimal amount of time and effort, yet can provide that much-needed sense of accomplishment.  Here are some ideas to consider:

  1. When someone comes to mind, pray for that person.
  1. Smile at a stranger.
  1. Send a card or note of encouragement to a friend or loved one.
  1. Hold the door for the person entering the building behind you.
  1. Shoot an email or text message to someone you haven’t heard from in a while.
  1. Engage in a random act of kindness.
  1. Ask someone how they’re doing and take the time to really listen to what they have to say.
  1. Say the words “I love you” to one who needs to hear it.
  1. Pay a sincere compliment to someone.
  1. Spend time in God’s presence and allow Him to fill you up so you have something to pour out on others.

While you may not change the world or even make it through your to-do list today, committing to accomplishing one of these little things can make a big difference in someone’s life, perhaps even your own.
